Pre and Post Botox Treatment: Essential Guidelines

Written by Face Forward Aesthetics | Jun 25, 2025 4:00:00 AM

Popular cosmetic procedures such as wrinkle relaxers (Botox, Dysport) and dermal fillers (Juvederm, Restylane) offer a wide-range of beauty solutions. Botox and Dysport relax muscles and minimize the appearance of wrinkles and frown lines caused by facial expressions. Dermal fillers restore volume loss to the cheeks and soften folds around the mouth, lips, and smile lines. Ensuring that you follow all of your wrinkle relaxer treatment instructions – before and after each visit – provides the most optimal results!

Let’s dive into the specifics of what to do before and after your wrinkle relaxer appointment to ensure your treatment is effective and long-lasting.

Wrinkle Relaxer Pre and Post-Care Instructions

You will achieve the best results from your Botox and Dysport treatments by following these guidelines. Please note that you should not receive wrinkle relaxers if you have a neuromuscular disorder, an allergy to botulinum toxin, allergy to human albumin (Botox), allergy to cow’s milk protein (Dysport), myasthenia gravis, if you’ve had Bell’s Palsy within the the past 3 years, if you’ve had a seizure in the past 30 days, or if you are pregnant or breastfeeding.

Pre-Botox Instructions

To maximize the benefits of Botox, preparation is key. Here’s what you should do leading up to your appointment:

  • When scheduling your appointment: Ask your provider any questions you may have about pre- and post-Botox treatment.
  • One week prior: Avoid blood-thinning medication such as ibuprofen, aspirin, Aleve and Motrin to prevent bruising, and avoid herbal supplements, such as omega-3 capsules, vitamin E, St. John’s Wort, garlic and ginkgo biloba. Inform the Nurse Practioner of your medications and if you have any skin conditions requiring prescriptions.
  • Three days prior: Avoid waxing, tweezing, bleaching and hair removal creams. Don’t use anti-aging products such as alpha hydroxy acid, Tretinoin (Retin-A), glycolic acid, retinols and retinoids for three days prior.
  • 24 hours prior: Avoid alcohol and caffeine to prevent extra bruising.
  • The day of: Eat a snack or meal before your appointment. One hour before your treatment, take Tylenol.

Botox Preparation

The goal of Botox aftercare is to encourage optimal treatment results. It can also minimize the risk of bruising and spreading to other areas:

Two weeks Prior to Treatment:

  • Vaccinations: Make sure to let your provider know if you’ve had any vaccines within the 2 weeks leading up to to your wrinkle relaxer appointment. The heightened immune response that follows vaccination is a time-frame that you want to avoid any elective cosmetic procedures.
  • Antibiotics / Infections / Illness: Wait 1-2 weeks after any illness, infection, virus, or antibiotic use to proceed with a wrinkle relaxer treatment. We want to give your body’s immune system time to return back to baseline.

One Week Prior to Treatment:

  • Avoid Blood-Thinning Medications: Refrain from taking aspirin, Excedrin, ibuprofen (Advil, Motrin), Aleve, or other anti-inflammatory (NSAID) medications to minimize bleeding and bruising during and after your treatment. Similarly, avoid herbal supplements such as omega-3 capsules, fish oil, vitamin E, St. John’s Wort, garlic, and ginkgo biloba.

Three Days Prior to Treatment:

  • Avoid Skincare Actives: Stop using anti-aging products like Tretinoin (Retin-A), retinols, and retinoids. These products can irritate the skin and increase sensitivity.
  • No Waxing or Hair Removal: Avoid waxing, tweezing, bleaching, laser hair removal, and depilatory creams on or near the treatment area.
  • Avoid alcohol: Drinking any type of alcoholic beverage within the 3 days leading up to your wrinkle relaxer treatment can increase your risk of bleeding and bruising.

24 Hours Prior to Treatment:

  • Avoid Caffeine: Skip the coffee or energy drink the day of your visit to reduce your risk of bleeding and bruising.

The Day of Your Appointment:

  • Consult Your Nurse Practitioner: Make sure to inform the provider at your visit about any medications you’re taking, medical conditions that you’re being treated for, or if you have any skin conditions requiring prescription treatments.
  • Eat a Snack & Stay Hydrated: Have a light snack or meal and make sure to drink plenty of water before your appointment to avoid feeling lightheaded.
  • Take Tylenol if Needed: Consider taking Tylenol (acetaminophen) an hour before your treatment if you’re concerned about discomfort during the injection process.

Post-Botox Instructions

After your Botox treatment, follow the correct aftercare procedures to ensure that your results will be effective and long-lasting.

Four Hours After Treatment:

  • Stay Upright: Do not lie down, lean forward, or apply pressure to the treated area for at least four hours post-treatment to prevent the wrinkle relaxer from migrating to unintended areas and causing complications.
  • Avoid Physical Strain: Refrain from vigorous exercise, heavy lifting, or straining. Increased circulation can cause Botox to move away from the injection site.
  • Skip Headgear: Avoid wearing hats, headbands, or anything that could put pressure on the treated areas.

24-48 Hours After Treatment:

  • Limit Makeup Application: Wait 24 hours before applying makeup. This helps prevent the development of pustules, irritation, or infection.
  • Watch Your Diet: For the first 24-48 hours, avoid alcohol, caffeine, and high-sodium foods as they can exacerbate swelling.
  • Avoid Retinoids & Similar Products: Steer clear of Retin-A, Tazorac, and Kinerase to prevent increased redness or irritation.

72 Hours After Treatment:

  • Avoid Certain Supplements & Medications: Continue to avoid blood-thinning medications, garlic, vitamin E, cod liver oil, and any other supplements known to increase bruising for up to three days after treatment.

Two Weeks After Treatment:

  • Delay Other Cosmetic Treatments: Wait at least two weeks before getting any additional cosmetic treatments, such as: facials, chemical peels, laser treatments, permanent makeup, microblading, microneedling, or ultrasound therapies. Avoid facial massages during this period as well to ensure the Botox settles properly.

Timeline for Results

  • 3-5 Days Post-Treatment: You’ll begin to see the initial effects, with wrinkles starting to relax and fade.
  • 14 Days Post-Treatment: This is when you’ll see the full results. By this time, your facial muscles will have fully responded, and your skin will appear smoother and more youthful.
  • 6-8 Weeks Post-Treatment: This is when you’ll start to see the wrinkle relaxer wear off, and your movement will slowly begin to return. This is normal!
  • 3-4 Months Post-Treatment: Results typically last 3-4 months, so by this timeframe your facial movement is essentially “back to baseline”. Wrinkles have likely re-appeared, signaling it’s time for your next treatment!

Common Botox Mistakes to Avoid

To get the best possible outcome from your Botox treatment, it’s important to avoid these common mistakes:

  • Receiving Botox While Pregnant or Nursing: At Face Forward Aesthetics, we do not treat pregnant or breastfeeding individuals with Botox due to potential risks.
  • Skipping Appointments: Consistency is key to great long-term results. If recommended by your provider, be sure to attend follow-up sessions.
  • Not Disclosing Medical History and Medications: Failing to inform your provider about any medications or supplements that you’re taking, including you full detailed medical history, can increase your risk of complications.

In Conclusion

Wrinkle relaxers, such as Botox and Dysport, are a great way to reduce the appearance of wrinkles and maintain a youthful look, but proper care before and after your treatment is essential for optimal results.
